Care depends on fabric, dye, lining and embellishment. Always follow the garment label and product instructions first. When details are uncertain, professional cleaning is safer than experimenting on an occasion garment.
Before cleaning
- Check the care label and note every fabric in the outfit.
- Remove detachable accessories when instructed.
- Tell the cleaner about stains, metallic thread, glued stones and delicate trims.
- Do not spot-test on a visible area.
Storage
- Store garments clean and completely dry.
- Use breathable covers rather than sealed plastic for long-term storage.
- Support heavy garments by folding them with acid-free tissue instead of hanging from delicate shoulders.
- Refold periodically to reduce permanent crease stress.
- Keep embroidery from rubbing against other garments.
Steam and ironing
Use the lowest suitable temperature, protect embroidery with a clean cloth and work from the reverse when the label permits. Avoid direct heat on sequins, synthetic trims, velvet pile and glued decoration.
Travel
Layer the outfit with tissue, protect jewelry separately and unpack promptly. A portable steamer may help only when the fabric and trim permit steam.
