South Asian Clothing Size Guide for US Shoppers

South Asian clothing often uses designer-specific sizing, so the label is only a starting point. Use this guide to measure for sarees and blouses, lehenga choli, salwar kameez, Anarkali suits, kurtas and sherwanis before comparing your numbers with each product listing.

Important: The charts below are general starting references, not universal designer charts. Product-specific measurements take priority. If you fall between sizes, choose for the least adjustable or most fitted area.

Before you measure

What you need

  • A flexible, non-stretch measuring tape
  • Close-fitting clothing or planned undergarments
  • A mirror and, ideally, a second person
  • Paper or your phone to record inches and centimeters

Four accuracy rules

  1. Stand naturally; do not hold your breath.
  2. Keep the tape level and parallel to the floor.
  3. Keep it comfortably close, never pulled tight.
  4. Measure twice and record the larger reading.

Garment-specific fit guide

Saree blouse

Prioritize bust, underbust, shoulder, armhole, blouse length and sleeve. Confirm whether the blouse is stitched, semi-stitched or unstitched.

Lehenga choli

Measure blouse and skirt separately. For the skirt, use the intended waistband position, fullest hip and finished length with footwear.

Shop lehenga choli

Salwar kameez and Anarkali

Check bust, shoulder, armhole, hip, sleeve and kameez length. Allow ease for sitting, walking and dancing.

Shop salwar kameez

Kurta and sherwani

Prioritize chest, shoulder, neck, sleeve and garment length. Confirm included trousers and use inseam when relevant.

Body versus garment measurement: A finished garment is normally larger than the body to provide ease. Do not compare a body-chest number directly with a garment-chest number without accounting for that difference.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose my usual US dress size?

Use it only as a starting point. South Asian designer sizing varies, so current body measurements and the product-specific chart are more reliable.

What if I am between two sizes?

Choose for the largest or least adjustable measurement. A fitted blouse may need to accommodate the bust, while a structured lehenga waistband must accommodate the intended waist position.

How much ease should a garment have?

Ease depends on silhouette and fabric. Fitted blouses use less ease than relaxed kurtas. Stretch, lining and embroidery also affect comfort, so consult the product details.

Do I measure over clothing?

Measure over close-fitting clothing or the undergarments you plan to wear. Bulky layers can add inaccurate inches.

How do I measure lehenga length?

Start at the intended waistband position and measure straight to the desired hem while wearing the shoes planned for the event.

Can Desi Clothing USA help me choose?

Yes. Send your measurements and the product link to our US-based customer support team before ordering.
